Instructions Following Insertion of Dentures
Once the dentures have been inserted you should not attempt to remove them. The denture acts like a bandage and protects your gums as they heal. If the denture is prematurely removed the gums may swell preventing the denture from being reinserted. It is normal for some oozing or bleeding to occur from the extraction sites under the dentures.
At the first follow up visit with your dentist/denturist (usually 24 hrs after insertion) the dentures will be removed, the fit checked and all necessary initial adjustments will be made. At this visit you will be shown how to remove and replace the denture.
Eat only soft foods for the first 48 hrs and gently rinse the mouth with cool water after meals. Avoid hot drinks for the first day. Take your medications/painkillers as prescribed. Cold compresses can be helpful.
Initially your bite may feel uneven due to swelling of the gums. Expect your dentures to feel awkward for the first few weeks.
