Our Anesthesiologists

We have been offering dental care to Edmonton and its surrounding areas since 1997. We are here to help take care of your oral health by offering a wide array of dental services to suit your individual needs. 

 

Our staff members each bring in a level of commitment and years of experience to the practice and have all attained high standards of professional qualification.  We endeavour to provide optimal service in all facets of dentistry and to carry it out in the most comfortable and caring way possible.

Meet Dr. Matthew Cohen

Meet Dr. Matthew Cohen

Anesthesiologist, Medical Director

Dr. Cohen was raised in Saskatoon, SK. After completing medical school at the University of Saskatchewan he relocated to complete his specialist anesthesia training at the University of Alberta.

 

Dr. Cohen joined Dental Service Group in 2001 and has been our Medical Director since 2004. He holds a hospital appointment at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Alberta.

 

Dr. Cohen is passionate about improving clinical care for patients throughout the northern Alberta.  In his spare moments he can be found spending time with his wife, watching his children at jiu-jitsu, listening to music, or with his nose buried in a book.

Meet Dr. Neil Klassen

Dr. Klassen has been with DSG since 1998.  After completing medical school at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Klassen did an internship at the Saskatoon City Hospital. Following his internship, Dr. Klassen completed his residency in Anesthesia at the University of Alberta. He decided to further his education and training through the fellowship in trauma anesthesiology at Harborview Medical Center with the University of Washington. 

 

Dr. Klassen decided to move back to Edmonton and joined the Royal Alexandra Hospital as a Lecturer in Anesthesia and was eventually appointed to Clinical Professor with the University of Alberta. 

 

Dr. Klassen is currently a clinical professor at the U of A as well as the Deputy Zone Clinical Department Head of Anesthesia Edmonton Zone. 

 

When Dr. Klassen is not working, you can find him gardening, welding, or working on automotives.

Meet Dr. Nikhil Kembhavi

Dr. Kembhavi graduated from medical school from the University of Alberta and then went on to complete his Anesthesia Residency through the U of A. 

 

He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor with the U of A as well as a department mentor with the Royal Alexandra Anesthesia unit.   Dr. Kembhavi joined DSG in 2014. 

 

Dr. Kembhavi enjoys traveling, biking, running, fitness, and spending time with family and friends.  He is also a music fan and you can find him playing sax with his band during his off time.

Meet Dr. Jeffrey Popoff

Dr. Jeffrey Popoff was raised in Saskatoon and subsequently moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba for his undergrad BSc and medical school.  Dr. Popoff then went on to the University of Alberta in 2000 for his anesthesia residency. In 2005 he joined the Royal Alexandra Department of Anesthesia. 

 

Dr. Popoff is currently the U of A academic appointment Assistant Clinical Professor where he mentors medical students in training.  Dr. Popoff joined Dental Service Group in 2010.

 

When he is not working you will find him spending time with his 2 young daughters, swimming, or surfing in Hawaii!

Meet Dr. Alan Cheng

Dr. Cheng was born and raised in Edmonton.  He completed his pharmacy degree at the University of Alberta before completing medical school at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

 

He returned to Edmonton to complete his specialist training in Anesthesiology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Alberta - Dr. Cheng joined DSG in 2014. 

 

A Golden Bear and Queen's football alumni, Dr. Cheng enjoys staying active, travelling the world and a good book.

Dr. Heinrichs grew up in Calgary and moved to Edmonton for his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Alberta. Following medical school, Dr. Heinrichs spent five years in Winnipeg completing a residency in Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine.
Dr. Heinrichs finished his residency in 2019 and moved back to Edmonton to start work as an anesthesiologist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He is also a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Alberta and involved in exam preparation for Anesthesiology residents.
Outside of work Dr. Heinrichs enjoys skiing, riding bikes, and being with his family.
